چکیده

An investigation into the total blockage effects on aerodynamic drag in closed-wall wind tunnel testing has been carried out by computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The simulation of flow past two different realistic, full-scale, heavy-duty truck models was conducted. The models were placed at different yawing angles in the virtual wind tunnels with blockage ratio of about 10%; which is exactly the same as the DNW experimental wind tunnel geometry. To compare the results with ideal (blockage free condition) case, other simulations with larger cross section at the blockage ratio of 1.1% were also conducted. Comparisons of the ideal CFD results to the corrected Cd values obtained by some existing blockage correction methods for closed-wall wind tunnel are also examined.

EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF EFFECTS OF WALL POROSITY AND SUCTION ON THE FLOW QUALITY IN A TRANSONIC WIND TUNNEL

A trisonic wind tunnel has been modified to improve its flow quality when operating at transonic speeds through perforated walls and side suctions. The usefulness of such a perforated wall, already known, is reduction of the blockage effect as well as the shock elimination. Two types of perforated walls have been used in this investigation. The first wall had a porosity of about 22% and the hol...

Comprehensive Investigating on the Aerodynamic Influences of the Wheel Contact Patch

Computational fluid dynamics is implemented to investigate the influence of the wheel contact patch on the global car aerodynamics. Two main aspects of the problem are the contact step and patch shape. Three important parameters: step height, cut angle, and tire tread shape are taken into consideration. For validations of the numerical results, the experimental data are also considered. The obt...

A Review of Recent Studies on Simulations for Flow around High-Speed Trains

Fluid flow around bluff bodies occurs in numerous fields of science and engineering, such as flows pass vehicles, cables, towers and bridges. These flows have been studied experimentally and numerically for the last several decades. The investigation of flow around high-speed trains is an important application of bluff bodies. Fluid flow, aerodynamic forces and moments, separation and wake regi...

Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes Simulation of a 2D Circulation Control Wind Tunnel Experiment

Numerical simulations are performed using a Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) flow solver for a circulation control airfoil. 2D and 3D simulation results are compared to a circulation control wind tunnel test conducted at the NASA Langley Basic Aerodynamics Research Tunnel (BART). The RANS simulations are compared to a low blowing case with a jet momentum coefficient, Cμ, of 0.047 and a hi...
